Our Issues

Attainable Housing and Sustainable Growth

Housing costs are soaring, impacting all types of housing. Throughout my tenure on the Planning Commission and City Council, I've championed housing measures that address this crisis while safeguarding our environment. Notably, I successfully implemented Missing Middle Housing policies, facilitating infill development like ADUs, duplexes/triplexes, and cottage housing, increasing housing density without compromising our natural landscapes. As County Commissioner I would continue this work, encouraging infill in developed and urban areas to preserve greenspace while meeting housing demands. As a Kitsap Regional Coordinating Council board member, I am actively engaged in supporting ADU streamlining countywide and collaborating with state officials to secure financial resources for ADU development. Moreover, recognizing permitting challenges hindering housing construction, I am committed to prioritizing permit staff support and process streamlining as County Commissioner.

Access to Quality Healthcare

We are experiencing a dire healthcare shortage in the county due to the consolidation of healthcare providers, the Navy reducing medical coverage, and an increasing population. One of my first actions on Council, as a founding member of the Alliance for Equitable Healthcare, was to reach out to healthcare providers across the state and entice them to open up shop in Kitsap, and I’m proud that as a result, Multicare is now opening the first ER near Bremerton since Harrison Hospital was shut down in 2020. As County Commissioner, I will continue to work towards more options and providers, including working with federal officials to have the Navy once again provide healthcare to personnel and private citizens so that our local system is not overburdened. I will collaborate with OC, WSU, WWU, and others for more healthcare job training to address the critical shortage of healthcare workers we face. I would give voters the choice of establishing a Public Hospital District to provide sustainable funding to expand access to quality healthcare for all of Kitsap.

Connected and Reliable Transportation

I’ve collaborated with state and local officials to Fix Our Ferries and will continue to fight to restore full service to Southworth and Bremerton. I wrote a Council resolution arguing for equity-focused ferry restoration in 2022 that gained support at the state level, and I’ll continue these collaborations from the county level to ensure Kitsap is not left stranded again. I’ve championed connected streets and trails that provide safe travel for all. I've worked on the almost $30 million Warren Bridge project to ensure that it supported multimodal travel — hikers, bikers, rollers, and strollers — and a plan for bike lanes on 6th Street, thanks to collaborating with local activists, state officials, and my fellow Councilmembers. At the county level, I have a vision of a connected Kitsap that allows anyone to get from one end of the county to the other by any mode of transportation. Working as a member of the Gorst Coalition, I know we can secure funding to enhance that corridor in a way that not only streamlines automobile traffic but ensures it is an efficient bus route and accommodates bikes and other electric or non-motorized travel.

Economic Vitality and Small Business Assistance

I have experience running a small non-profit and understand the challenges that small businesses encounter. It's crucial to foster an environment in our county where small businesses can thrive. Our county departments, including permitting and community development, must prioritize customer service and collaborate closely with small businesses to ensure their success and find effective solutions. I've collaborated closely with the Downtown Bremerton Association towards achieving Main Street Certification and promoting historic preservation, which offers financial incentives from the state. As a County Commissioner, I would actively support these initiatives countywide to benefit all communities. It's vital to create a county where residents can live, work, and play, fostering upward mobility and addressing equity issues. This means ensuring support not only for basic and higher education but also for trades and on-the-job training programs.

Public Safety and Support

Ensuring the safety and well-being of our community is my top priority. Throughout my public service tenure, I've championed initiatives that enhance public safety measures and provide crucial support to those in need. By collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies and community organizations, I've implemented effective crime prevention strategies and expanded access to support services for vulnerable populations, including addressing homelessness. During my time as Council President, I worked alongside nonprofits to establish Bremerton's first hybrid homeless shelter model, emphasizing a continuum of care to facilitate pathways out of homelessness. As County Commissioner, I remain committed to prioritizing public safety efforts while advocating for policies that promote community engagement, resilience, and inclusivity, fostering a safer and more supportive environment for all Kitsap County residents.
